How to fish correctly?

Hello to everybody...

I've been trying to fish for half an hour now, and didn't drop anything...
Can someone maybe explain how it works, what you can get and if its worth?

Hello, to make money.. not really worth it.

To catch rare fishes that buff your Strength, Dex and so forth.. Yes it's worth it.
There's no proper way to fish though, it comes down to patience.
